Just 90 minutes drive from Auckland is the Coromandel with it's dramatic coast, native trees and white sandy beaches.
There are several charming towns in Coromandel. Whitianga is a thriving town with a relatively sheltered by is great for water sports and where nature has created the magical Cathedral Cove and the famous Hot Water Beach.
Thames is the region's gateway and was built on gold mining and Kauri logging, and this history is still evident in pubs, shops and restaurants today. At nearly 7 metres high, the L&P (Lemon & Paeroa fizzy drink) is a reminder of the therapeutic Paeroa Spring Water discovered before 1900, which with the addition of lemon, became know as New Zealand's own national soft drink.
Whangamata provides and unique combination of rainforest and beaches. Great surf and yet the safest swimming in New Zealand.
