Things to see & do in Fiordland - New Zealand
Milford Sound ..... Milford is the most
well known of the fiords and the only one that
has access by road. It seems almost sculptured
with it's sheer cliffs rising up from the ocean
and incredibly grand Mitre Peak. Wet or fine,
Milford is breathtaking. You can discover the
beautiful scenery of this famous fiord by foot,
sea kayak, boat cruise or scenic flight.
Milford
Deep Underwater Observatory ...... Enter the
only Observatory in the world where you can view
a beautiful subterranean world with deep-sea
species in their natural surroundings below the
surface of the fiord; quite different from the
artificial environment of an aquarium.
Milford Track ..... Milford Track has
been described as the finest walk in the world.
Walker's on the Milford Track experience
Fiordland at its most spectacular. Fine days
provide postcard pictures and when it rains you
will experience the true magic of the Milford
Track with it's water cascading down the
mountainsides. Other famous walking tracks in
the region are Kepler, Hollyford and Routeburn
Tracks. Guides are available for some tracks.
Lake Te Anau / Te Anau Caves ..... The township of Te Anau on
the shores of the beautiful lake is an
attractive resort town. Lake
Te Anau is the largest lake in the South Island
and second largest lake within New Zealand. Te Anau provide the Gateway’s
to the Fiords, with access to both Milford and
Doubtful Sound. An excellent base to explore the
Fiordland area. The glowworm
caves are also a well-known attraction
accessible from Te Anau by regular scheduled
launch. The delicate incandescence of blue-green
shimmer thousands of tiny glowworms is a magical
sight.
Lake Manapouri ..... Twenty minutes
from Te Anau is picturesque Lake Manapouri, a
beautiful lake framed by the spectacular
Cathedral Mountains. The township of Manapouri
sits on the shores of the lake of the same name.
Lake Manapouri is the second deepest lake in New
Zealand, dipping to over 440 metres between
Pomona Island. Pearl Harbour, adjacent to
Manapouri township, is the gateway to the
variety of activities on Lake Manapouri and
Doubtful Sound. Launch trips on Doubtful Sound
begin with a launch trip across Lake Manapouri
to West Arm, a visit to the West Arm underground
power station, followed by a bus trip
across the majestic Wilmot Pass into Deep Cove.
Doubtful Sound ..... Doubtful Sound is
the deepest of all the fiords at 420m, and is
the second longest fiord at 40 km long. There
are three distinct arms off the main fiord and
several outstanding waterfalls including the
Browne Falls, cascading 619m to the fiord near
the beautiful Hall Arm, and the Helena Falls at
Deep Cove. Bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur
seals and the Fiordland crested penguins can be
seen on many of the small islets in the fiord.
